Public Transportation
Like nearby Downtown and Central Austin, East Austin enjoys access to the MetroBus, miles of bike-friendly routes, and seasons of amazing weather that make the city so walkable. You’re never too far from a public transportation option to get you where you need to go.

Proximity
The I-35 is very convenient to access from East Austin, so you’re connected to the rest of the city by car. East Austin also is within walking or biking distance of the University of Texas at Austin campus. You’ll also have a short drive to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the State Capitol building, and other features of the Austin area.

School System
East Austin schools are a part of the Austin Independent School District, which has been consistently rated well by the Texas Education Agency. In addition to the public schools that students have access to, there also are a number of exceptional private and charter school options for all ages. The school system in this area is experiencing a large expansion as families flock to the neighborhood. The Austin Community College has its Eastview campus in East Austin. East Austin is also a popular neighborhood for students attending the University of Texas at Austin.

Population
East Austin is composed of a mix of young families, college students, and older longtime residents. The neighborhood is growing and changing but it still clings to its history in places.

Nightlife
Away from the bustle of downtown, the local nightlife focuses on laid-back bars, delicious food, and lots of live music. You can catch food trucks outside some of the hottest bars in town, dance the night away, and enjoy the late-night vibe that East Austin offers.

East Cesar Chaves Street is dotted with local shops offering everything from vintage clothing to artisan crafts, small-batch beauty products, and hand stitched boots. If you’re looking for unique gifts, fashion, or home décor, the trendy East Austin shops have it!

 

Museums & Galleries
Kids and adults alike will love Thinkery, a fantastic, science-focused museum. Get some hands-on fun in the all-ages friendly galleries that encourage young explorers to experiment and learn. The George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural & Genealogy Center is another fantastic, family-friendly museum, exploring African American history and culture.

Entertainment
If you’re in East Austin, live music is the thing to see. The area is dotted with small concert venues that often feature incredible acts, ranging from local artists to national stars. The White Horse is one of the most popular local music venues. You can also stroll the Tejano Walking Trails, which gives a guided tour of some of the cultural highlights of the East Austin neighborhoods.

RECREATION

Trendy and edgy, the East Austin area isn’t as sleek as neighboring Downtown Austin, but it is just as hip.

Food Scene
Austinites looking to avoid the crowds of Sixth Street often head to East Austin for intimate, late night dining. The Austin food scene is unique and offers something for every taste. Many locals can’t get enough of Laundrette, an adorable date spot, or La Barbecue, a fantastic barbecue stand.

Parks & Natural Landmarks
The Colorado River borders East Austin, and the Lady Bird Lake Park is just a bit to the southwest and features miles of amazing hiking and biking trails. To the south, there’s also the Edward Rendon Sr. Metro Park at Festival Beach, a popular spot for fishing and concerts. Across the river, you may want to visit the Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metro Park.

Outdoor Activities
Austin experiences beautiful weather all year long, so it’s possible to enjoy the great outdoors in every season here.
